How do you measure for a kimono/furisode/yukata Etc.?
I'm thinking about buying a kimono/furisode/yukata online from this website http://www.yamatoku.jp/classic/ What should I measure for the size, and if there is a better website, what is the website? Thank you for any help you might give.
Hi there.
I have checked the link you have posted above and it seems you are looking for lower priced kimonos and furisodes.
But if for any other reasons, I would recommend you to check on this site below:
http://www.sayolis.com/htm-new/index.htm
This website is home to one of the best and most professional kimono makers of Kyoto. SAYOLIS kimonos are made with velcro for easy and modern wearing, and best of all, it is tailored to the body. Their kimono designs are unique to order. You can be assured there won't be another of the same design in the world. This website is generally in Japanese, but if you poke around for abit, its rather easy to navigate yourself after awhile.
Buying a kimono/furisode is a very special custom. You might want to spend a little more, and consider a really good one for keepstakes. You can follow the tradition of handing down your kimonos! ^_^ They can be worth tons, if auctioned at a later date ( especially if the kimonos you buy are unique in design and production). In addition to that, getting your kimonos custom-made allows you to have them made to your measurements.
As for your question about kimono measurements, it is hardly possible to measure up kimonos that are already made, and ready-to-buy, as posted in the link you gave. Under such circumstances, you can only pray the measurements are not too far away from yours.
Generally, kimonos are either "free-sized" or they go according to your HEIGHT. e.g 151~160cm, 167~177cm. If otherwise, ITS THE WAY YOU WEAR IT that accounts for the measurements.
If you read up about how to wear a kimono/furisode, its how you tie the strings (and the skill required in folding the kimono to your body) that allows you to wear the kimono properly. Measurements of the kimono are not the key aspect of kimono wearing. I could still wear my mother's furisode when it was handed down to me, and it was nearly half a size larger than I was at my coming of age. =D Not to worry!
As for CHEAP YUKATAs, my suggestion is to get a friend to make a run to Kyoto or Nagoya and shop them out for you according to your HEIGHT measurements.
Osu Kannon ( a major teenage shopping District named after the temple nearby) is a HUGE massive ground level, sheltered, street-side shopping district that sells from anything J-pop, J-rock, to traditional yukatas, kimonos and obi/accessories at VERY cheap prices in NAGOYA. Nearly just US$20 for a FULL SET of yukata (tabi socks, geta shoes, obi and obi-jime (string) included!)
Feel free to email me at : makoto_youko_chan@yahoo.co.jp, if you have any more questions with regards to this.
Cheers! and Happy New Year 2007 ^_^
