A Tribute to Maestro Ukiyo-e Koryusai undervalued
Introduction
ISoda Koryusai (c.1735-90), originally a samurai became, after the death of his master, Mr. Tsuchiya, a ronin named (a gentleman lordless) and a "floating man." Most of these "floating people" ended up in shallow water, but Koryusai chose to be a painter and designer of woodcuts. At first it was very likely a student of Nishimura Shigenaga (1697-1756), but his friend and master of Ukiyo-e Harunobu (c.1725-1770) had the greatest influence on his work. It gave him Harunobu seen (Pseudonym) Koryusai, his real name was Masakatsu, who had once used himself in the past. The respect and admiration for his master Koryusai were so great that he developed his own style until he died Harunobu. He overcame different print formats and genres especially Ukiyo-e format Print and pillar of the genre shunga (erotic), which will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
Pilar Print
Koryusai achieved remarkable results in the long narrow format printing pillar (Hashira-e) with a unique style, rich and opulent decorative coloring and for the reintroduction of the use of opaque orange (tan) that had characterized the colored hand prints of the past. He also used the vertical size of this format to give the appearance of a hanging scroll (kakemono) acquisition of a certain stratification. As in the conventional style of Japanese landscape painting to the viewer's eyes start at the bottom of the image in the eye leading to the middle and then the depiciting high background. In general Hashira-e are rare because at the time attached to the timber interior columns as part of the Japanese and therefore more susceptible damage. But because of the considerable number of impressions Koryusai pillar designed in this format of many of his designs have survived.
Erotic work
"The color and line, in creating the overall atmosphere of physical love, the Koryusai best color prints are unsurpassed in erotic Japanese art, and this explains in particular the high esteem in which takes place among connoisseurs - for little people you have pursued the cult of artistic eroticism as assiduously as the "Japanese. (Richard Lane)
During Harunobu and Koryusai period activities of government censorship was rather weak given the opportunity to experiment within the genre of shunga. Sometimes even signed their designs are often positioning within the context of a sliding door or screen. Koryusai early work resembles that of Harunobu, but gradually developed his own distinctive style bright colors (orange famous!), expressing a colorful vitality and more realistic figures. Wood artists worked initially in the form chuba (Approx. 265 x 195 mm) to Koryusai Oban format introduced higher (ca. 390 x 265 mm) in the medium-color printing multiple creation of two series masterpiece called Sexy Colors, A phoenix Released in the field "and has twelve of Love", which published in ca.1775. The format chuba his most famous series is "Happy Flowers of the Twelve stations elegant" (ca.1773) find love that represent each of the twelve months.
Conclusion
If one examines the literature on the history of Ukiyo-e and especially the artist Koryusai you realize the general consensus among critics for its excellent craftsmanship, originality and pioneer in the Japanese art. With the recognition genius general question of why is so underrated to this day becomes more explicit. Probably one of the reasons was the modest personality Koryusai and loyalty to his teacher and friend of Harunobu sometimes even sign his name. Jack Hillier raises an interesting theory in his book "The Japanese Print - A new approach "when it chooses:
"There is always, especially among collectors, a tendency to comparisons between the artist and the artist, and Koryusai may be a case of look before and after and pine for what is not. "
