Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty, formerly known as "Liberty Enlightening the World" was the creation of French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, a gift from France to the United States. It was built hundreds of employees working 7 days a week, 10 hours a day, 9 years to complete in 1884. Statue 350 items in 214 boxes packed and shipped from France to New York. The statue was rebuilt on Bedloe Island, now called Island Freedom, in the port of New York because that was where people get their first view of the New World, who sailed into the harbor. The statue is a universal symbol of freedom that welcomes all immigrants to the United States.
Situated on an island of 12 acres, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.
In transit, the Statue was reduced to 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 boxes. The statue was reassembled on its new pedestal in four months. On October 28, 1886, dedication of the Statue of Liberty took place in front thousands of spectators. She was a centennial gift ten years late. "The history of the Statue of Liberty and the island has been one of change. The statue was placed on a granite pedestal inside the courtyard of the star-shaped walls of Fort Wood (which had been prepared for the war in 1812.)
History
The construction of the statue began in France in 1875, by sculptor Auguste Bartholdi. The final completion date of the individual sections was in June 1884, and was in Paris until it was dismantled in early 1885 for shipment to the U.S.. Engineering assembly of the structure was made by Gustave Eiffel. The French frigate "Isere" transported the Statue from France to the United States. In transit the Statue was reduced to 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 boxes.
There are 354 steps inside the statue and pedestal. There are 25 viewing windows in the crown. The seven rays of Liberty's crown symbolize the seven seas and seven continents. Freedom has a tablet on the left hand that reads "July 4, 1776" (in Roman numerals), Independence Day United States of America.
Symbolism
The classical appearance (Roman stole, sandals, facial expression) derives from Libertas, ancient Rome's goddess of freedom from slavery, oppression and tyranny. He lifted his right foot is in motion. This symbol Freedom and Liberty is not standing still or in attendance at the port, which is moving, as their left foot hits the broken shackles at her feet, in symbolism of the will United States to be free from oppression and tyranny. The seven spikes on the crown represent the seven seas and seven continents.
America probably could not have won freedom from the British during the American Revolution without the help of the French. France provided arms, ships, money and men to the American colonies. Some Frenchmen - most notably the Marquis de Lafayette, a close friend of George Washington - even became high officials in the army U.S.. It was an alliance of respect and friendship that the French do not forget.
Statue of Liberty, representative of freedom to the world, shines in the port New York. Built by the French Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the statue was a gift from France to the United States. Now, visitors can see inside the statue through a glass ceiling, and capture a better image of the Statue of Liberty through the enhanced lighting and video system surrounding the statue. Again, visitors can walk on the observation deck to see New York City and its port. With a torch and a book in their hands, Statue of Liberty has generously provided welcome immigrants and visitors for over a century.
