Does an artist who draws the human figure really have to memorize all the bones and muscles?
Would it not suffice to look at anatomical diagrams/models as references while drawing/painting/sculpting? In time I'm sure the artist would memorize the parts through that method, but I mean for artists just starting out with the human figure, would these references be okay to use?
Anatomy textbooks are just fine for artists to study, and you don't have to memorize every term for every bone or muscle. However, you should be using the text in conjunction with life drawing -- from a model, preferably nude -- so that you can relate the underlying anatomy to the human form as it is normally seen in action or a pose.
This is one of the reasons why life drawing and anatomical studies together have long been a traditional part of an artist's training.
