What are the Dead Sea Scrolls were Essenes
What are the Dead Sea Scrolls?
The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of 900 ancient Jewish writings that were found in 11 caves near Wadi Qumran between 1946 and 1956. These writings have been dated about 2000 years. The texts are of great religious and historical importance, including the oldest known surviving examples of the Old Bible Testament and extra-biblical documents. The book of Isaiah in the Old Testament are among the Dead Sea Scrolls is a complete book and was dated around 100BC, which then was compared to the Masoretic manuscripts dated about 1000AD and 95% of these texts were exactly the same, the difference of 5% were spelling errors or differences and other clerical errors minor. (1)
The scrolls were written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, mostly on parchment, but some were written on papyrus. The rolls are traditionally identified with the ancient Jewish sect called the Essenes, although some recent debate has arisen concerning the scrolls that written by priests, Zadokites, or other unknown Jewish groups. The rolls are divided into three groups: the first is the biblical texts, the latter are apocryphal writings known at the time of the Second Temple and, finally, the last are classified as sectarian (2)
Is Christianity a branch of the Essenes
The Dead Sea Scrolls also provide evidence that Qumran is not the origin of Christianity, there are many differences in what was taught by Jesus and early Christianity compared with the Essenes. The teacher of righteousness is considerably different than Jesus Christ for what he teaches, for example, Essenes emphasized the hatred of enemies, but Christ taught to love the enemy, the Essenes were legalistic about the Sabbath, Jesus was not, Essenes is exclusive of women, sinners and outsiders, but Jesus was inclusive, Essenes stressed the purity laws, but Jesus and finally attacked Essenes believed in two Messiahs but the early Christians believed in one and that was Jesus Christ. These differences are sufficient to show that early Christianity is not a branch of the Essenes. (3)
