2.09 of potassium is heated in a porcelain boat in a stream of oxygen that is diluted.when the reaction is?
complete, the material in the boat has been turned into yellow powder, and its mass is 3.80 g.
calculate in the form of percentages of potassium and oxygen, the chemical compound of potassium and oxygen that has been formed.
The material has gained 3.80g-2.09g = 1.71 g which we assume is all oxygen.
So there are 2.09 g of K*(mol/39.098g) = 0.0535 mol K
And there are 1.71 g of O*(mol/15.999g) = 0.1068 mol O
if you do a ratio there are one mole of O for every two mole of K. So you would have the empirical formula of K2O.
This is a yellow powder so the compound must be K2O.
As far as the percentage of each element, it depends if it is percent mass or percent by moles.
