China and Tibet-what Next?
Tibet borders India in the north with the Himalayas as a barrier between the two nations. It has been for centuries a buffer between India and China. Tibet has its own distinctive culture that differs to a great extant from that of China. But China has always coveted Tibet and tried to have control over it.
At the turn of the last century Colonel Younghusband on the orders of Lord Curzon invaded Tibet in 1903-04. The Tibetans were defeated and had to open their country to the British who were allowed to have a representative in Lhasa.
Tibet functioned with a degree of independence during the period between the two wars. However the end of the Second World War saw a gigantic upheaval in the political scenario. The British left India and China under the communists invaded Tibet. They occupied Lhasa as Nehru unable to comprehend the game of power politics took no action.
The Communists now established a vice like grip over Tibet. The Tibetans were suppressed and they revolted. There was bloody fighting as the Chinese Army put down the rebellion ruthlessly. The Dali Lama the spiritual head of Tibet escaped to India and was granted political asylum by Nehru.
The Chinese enforced their rule with a great degree of repression.Tibetan culture was denigrated and the age old practices of the Lams curtailed. Tibetan nuns were forcibly married to Chinese It was the beginning of a dark age for the Tibetan people. In this period the Indian Army suffered a devastating defeat to China and vast tracts of land were lost in Ladakh. The Chinese were thus able to consolidate their grip over Tibet. The Chinese even kidnapped young Tibetan girls and took them to China and Chinese from China were encouraged to settle in Tibet, so as to change the demographic character of the state.
As things stand the world and India can only sit and watch as a bystander as the Chinese systematically suppress Tibet culture. It is indeed a sad time as all that the United Nations and the USA can do is utter homilies. The Chinese also want no solution until it is on their own terms and do not want to talk to the Dalai Lama in India. Tibetan culture is totally suppressed and a curtain is drawn all over Tibet. There appears to be little hope for the Tibetan people. In hindsight the folly of Nehru in not reacting to the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950 will remain a blunder of the greatest magnitude.
