Journey through Central Asia
This mountainous land is the smallest country in Central Asia, but is the traditional on ramp to the Silk Road of China.
Three primary routes traveled caravan Tien-Shan, Tajikistan and Pamir. Only about 7% is arable land, mostly in the fertile href = "http://www.lust4asia.com"> Fergana Valley in the north, which produces the major agricultural crops, cotton, which, along with aluminum, are major exports.
Tajikistan's capital and largest city is Dushanbe Modern, European style, with wide avenues and a spectacular backdrop of snow-capped mountain. The city has several plazas and memorials Persian influences of the past and its surroundings contain many playgrounds, parks and mountain streams, one with a cascade of 100 feet. The National Archaeological Museum contains 1600 year old 'Tajik Buddha, "now thought the largest statue of its kind in Central Asia.
The museum also houses displays of Zoroastrian and Buddhist artifacts. Khujand is the country's second city largest commercial center and a former Silk Road. Located at the entrance to the fertile Fergana Valley, Khujand is cited as the easternmost city established by Alexander the Great. As such, it has a rich history and many preserved architectural and cultural sites.
It also happens to be a popular mountaineering center in a country where half the land is higher than 9.000 feet above sea level and has a number of peaks higher than 20,000 feet. Near the border with Uzbekistan is Penjikent, I was on the only route from east to Samarkand and flourished from the fifth century. The Arabs destroyed the city in the 8th century and the ruins were discovered in the past hundred years. Today, the excavation site became a memory reservoir where tourists can visit the medieval citadel, palace, public buildings, houses and a necropolis. Halfway between Penjikent and Dushanbe lies the emerald gem Iskander Kul (lake). The lake is at an altitude of 7,000 between the peaks of 4,000, plus of the Fan mountains, which contain many other fishing trips, skiing or items for the residents of Dushanbe. To the east is the larger Kara Kul situated between high and barren mountains, with their errier atmosphere and yak herds, are reminiscent of Tibet. The lake is often accessed from Kyrgyzstan, heading west from Osh.
