What kind and how much lime should be used for repointing of handmade bricks?
The brick wall I am repointing has handmade bricks and mortar that's at least over 100 yrs old. I'm guessing that the mortar mix is 1 part lime and 3 parts sand. My question is what kind of lime is used? High calcium lime found in pulverized lime? And should the same mortar be used on the stone foundation? Also, what course sand should I use?
100 years old? thats tricky considering they also used to use mother of pearl or oyster shells ground to a powder to get that effect. When I was 17 I worked for a testing and engineering firm (Still do) that had a project at mount vernon and arlington cemetery and the mortar for thos buildings had pearl shells ground to a powder and mixt with the mortar and lime and that had to mix based on an analysis of the mortar. You can also look a masonry supply stores at wall samples which these places generally provide block, stone, and face brick. They usually have an answer for you question there as well if your looking for color match. Look for natural sand as well which is a more whiter color when mixed coarseness is a factor in providing the color as well.
