Does anyone know the reason that there is usually a statue of the fat "laughing buddha" in dining halls?
In all the Chinese temples & monasteries I have visited, there is always a statue of MI LEI FO (CHINESE) - HOTEI (JAPANESE) - MAITREYA (SANSKRIT) - in the Dining Hall. Someone explained the reason to me once but I can't remember it now.
They represent happiness, prosperity, luck, wealth and contentment. They're like good luck charms.
