The real Japanese meaning of Kamae?
Hi there
Ok everyone knows that the Japanese word for Kamae doesnt really translate to mean stance or body position. So can anyone share their views on what they think its true meaning is? I have an understanding already. It just would be interested to hear some other views. I recently came across a reference to noh plays of Japan regarding kamae? Any thoughts?
According to the Budo Jiten (second edition) by Fredrick Lovret
Kamae: Any fighting posture.
While tachi refers to the position of the body from the waist down, Kamae refers to everything (including spiritual attitude).
Thanks, nwo, Shihan J, JimG. I like questions like these. My favorite one is the term Sensei. I was taught that it did not mean Instructor, teacher, or anything like that. i was taught that Sensei had a much deeper meaning. Basically something akin to "He who has gone before". Meant to describe someone of great knowledge, ability, and understanding. Someone who is well qualified to "Show the Way.
