Why do people state that the Japanese Katana was the the better weapon over the English Great Sword?
The English Great sword was almost double the length and reach of the Katana. The Katana was a two handed weapon meant for slashing damage only. The Katana was really good for the era it was used in with the Japanese using Bamboo armor. But can the Katana be considered a better weapon just because it was smaller. Just because the Great Sword was larger does not mean that the Great Sword was heavier or harder to use!
I didnt think that this would be so one sided. here read this
www.thearma.net/essays/knightvs.htm
this should even your mind (remember there is a difference between a
Sword Like Object S.L.O. and a true eastern sword)
the katana was a great weapon. there is no doubt in my mind to that. I just think that it is over rated and over used.
The better sword is the one in the hands of the person who knows how to use it the best.
Wulf -Troll Ripper is an idiot and 30+ years as a sword practicioner hasn't given him any brains. "Cut a western sword in half?!" Where did you pull this mindless theory from? No truth to it whatsoever.
"Western swords were not so sharp but more stabbing weapons or just brute smashing." Another mindless theory that he probably got from video games or TV. Perhaps you should get off of Yahoo Answers and go back to your WOW game.
if you have been to the ARMA website then you know that the western swords was NOT used by just brute smashing. It is no less of an art than any Asian system. You could also check out http://www.aemma.org (another western sword group) or even http://www.swordforum.com to learn all you want about the western (or eastern) sword.
There is no way to prove which sword was better. There were thousands of "warriors" of different skill levels with both types of swords and choosing the one that was "better" is not possible. Everyone has their personal preference. Mine is of course the western style sword, but that doesn't make me not respect the katana. In fact, I own 2 antique katanas. They are beautiful and very deadly weapons in the hands of the person that knows how to use it. Just like the greatsword.
