Shunga, Introduction to Japanese erotic mystery
Shunga, literally, "Images of Spring" is the generic term used to describe erotic prints, books, scrolls and paintings from Japan.
History
The beginning of the shunga genre is connected to the origins of ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world") and begins with Moronobu Hishikawa work and school between 1660-1670. Originally published as shunga erotic manuals (guides) for most popular courtesan in the pleasure houses. But with the growth of prosperity, expansion from brothels in Edo (now Tokyo) and alterations in the Japanese caste system traders get richer, adopting a hedonistic lifestyle, livestock shunga a purpose diversion. Shops in the Edo pleasure quarters, called the Yoshiwara, shunga prints and books sell souvenirs to visitors of the brothels. Shunga also were given as dowry to the newlyweds as a tutorial. During the Meiji period only a few specialized artists in the design of shunga prints which were mainly influenced by Western art.
The subjects and themes
