Any idea on the history of antique China copper bowl ?
I just bought an antique China copper bowl. I have very fine flora etching on all surfaces ( Inner and outer surfaces, including bottom). It could not be a fake or replica as the etching work is really too fine. Anybody have any idea on the history of such production ? I mean something like which dynasty it is likely from ? This bowl is in copper brown antique state and not like other bronze anitique which have greenish oxidation traces.
Does it have a chop mark anywhere on it?
The easiest way to tell how old something is is to learn the Chinese Zodiac.
The date seals on objects are in the form of chops (usually etched inside rectangles or squares with little marks inside.) that indicate the different animals of the zodiac. Rabbit, Ox, Tiger Etc... If you learn the symbols and understand how the dates correspond you'll have some general idea how old it is and from what dynasty.
Certain shapes were specific to certain dynasties as things were popular and pleasing to that Emperor like things are popular and in vogue today.
So know what shapes, what dates via the Zodiac and you'll get close enough to date it...
When an object has both elements, all elements even... as the metal used is also a factor as certain metals were abundent and popular during certain dynasties... then it is more likely to be a genuine artifact or antique. Copper however, was mainly used as a roofing material and it would have to be exceptionaly beautiful to be considered appropriate as court item...
There are so many copies on the market today... It is sad, and a shame. Those who make copies, will do so with a full understanding of all of the elements I have listed above. They know what they are doing and it shows in the excellent copies that exist all over the world...
People get ripped off all the time so that's why you should never over pay for something you are not 100% sure of, or didn't purchase directly from a dealer... Even still dealers can be shady too.
