Antique lamps - A stick lamp Printed Staffordshire
The invention of transfer printing on porcelain and pottery was without certainly one of the most important innovations in the development of the ceramic industry.
The honor of this development is the English writer, Robert Hancock, born Birmingham (1730-1817). First, meet Robert, recorded a copper plate engraver at York House, in Battersea enamel works in London. Here, beautiful copper cases little was done to the 18 th century English estate market and very expensive Vertu objects, jewelry called, perfume bottles, snuff boxes and products impractical such as boxes containing sewing tools, toothpicks, trays for holding pens, cartridges for tea and sugar and even chandeliers designed to imitate expensive pieces of silver.
In 1756 the factory closed Battersea and met with Robert at the Worcester porcelain factory in the same year. Robert Hancock had taken, obviously, his knowledge and experience in factory management, under the direction of Dr. John Wall.
The management was very impressed with the idea of this decorative technique quick! Since the opening of the factory in 1751, china painting had been a laborious and expensive process, carried out by the painters with colored enamel powder mixed with lavender oil and brushes.
Robert was able to show their skills print and the process was mastered shortly with the first plate, the famous copper engraving, printing black transfer occurs in 1757. The subject is Frederick the Great, king of Prussia, an ally and hero of the seven years of war.
transfer printing as developed in Battersea, began with the unique ability the recorder, copper plate, which deeply impressed, with a sharp stainless steel, the desired design. The design was engraved in reverse!, Thus allowing the final print appears "right way". Pigment was then added, often mixed with oil and heated to allow the color is deeper in copper plate engravings, excess ink is then wiped with a spatula. The copper plate, having been cleaned with a cloth then covered with a layer of tissue that was dampened and pressed onto the plate. Then, the tissue was lifted gently from the plate and set carefully in the way you want printed. As that the tissues are lifted away with skills, the design is left behind. This early print style left the impression in the top of the element Glass, who was fired after finally establishing the imprint on the glass surface.
As the 18 th century became the 19 th century, new ceramic printing techniques have been developed, not only to improve the technique, but make it faster, time is money! The big name here Josiah Spode's time that is credited with the introduction of transfer print under glaze blue Staffordshire, during 1781-1784.
During the early the 1800's, the tissue is replaced by a sheet of paper or cloth often. With a layer of adhesive applied, this could easily be cut and shaped to fit around curved objects such as plates and teapots. This is known as the "stick" print and process gives the alternative name "bat print." The ink bat was placed on the ceramic object and an impression left, leaving the impression of adhering to form. The item is then dipped in cooking glaze and return to oven for Gloster, or low. Tailed bats were reusable, plus it better conformed to curved surfaces. Cobalt blue under glaze printing transfer became an industry standard of Staffordshire ceramics.
Men like Josiah Spode, Wedgwood, Thomas Minton, and others were all business types and major figures of the great pottery industry in Staffordshire. Although sharing the friendly trade relations, each keeps an eye on the market! It was at this time that the major export markets were opening or expanding in North America, Europe and India, where consumers looked elegant sets matched goods.
