Tamil Thai Pongal Day - A Festival of the Meeting, Renewal and Thanksgiving
Thai Pongal is a festival celebrating Tamil the first day of Thailand, according to the Tamil Almanac. This usually falls in mid-January of the Gregorian calendar. Pongal refers to the meat-sweet rice and milk mixed with brown sugar and moongdal is the star dish of the festival.
It is a thanksgiving festival celebrating the harvest month, as a harbinger of prosperity. Its core is free of religious connotations in particular for Tamils around the world celebrate in much the same way. Therefore, Thai Pongal is widely known as the "festival of the Tamils."
This festival spans two days, during which farmers give thanks to the spirit nature, the sun god and farm animals to successfully harvest a rich crop. People who do not farm, turn to thank the farmers for food. Thus, the festival promotes unity and social cohesion.
Due to the significant minority Tamils in the demographic makeup of Sri Lanka, Thailand Pongal is one of the events of red-letter in the national calendar. Held more than two holidays, the Tamils of Sri Lanka also call this the first Rice Festival or Thirunaal Ulavar, as rice is a staple of local agriculture around which various deities and legends have evolved. However, the people of Sri Lanka and their Indian counterparts to observe both the same traditions and customs in relation to the party.
The solstice starts when the revolution of the Sun enters the sign of Capricorn, marking the Tamil farmers Suriyapakaran to honor the sun god. Although in reality this happens in late December, the festival is celebrated mid-January to coincide with the harvest of rice fields.
Traditionally, householders Tamil don new clothes bought especially for the occasion after bathing, gather at dawn to see how the clay pot rice with milk is poured to cries of pleasure "Pongal! Despite all the homes makes this rice is generously shares with its neighbors and with others promotion of communal harmony and unity.
family reunification and blessings are the main theme of the party. People visit family and friends and younger show respect for elders and receive their blessings in return.
The front yard is usually decorated with kolam drawings and a brick home set in the initial preparation for this ceremony. Kolam and Rangoli designs are created with rice flour dough with a piece of cow dung in the middle. A squash blossom, a symbol of fertility and love, is placed on top of manure (highly prized as fertilizer), while the pasta is expected to be eaten by ants and other insects to promote merit and blessings on the house.
The second day of the festival is called Pongal Maatu, which means festival of cattle. This day is set aside to appreciate and honor the animals who helped in the harvest. The bullocks are bathed and their horns painted in shades of red, blue, green and yellow. Their foreheads were anointed with turmeric and are adorned with garlands of flowers before being offered the traditional "Pooja" or the supply of fruits and other foods.
In Sri Lanka, Thai Pongal can be better observed, either in the north and mountain areas and Thalawakele Hatton, who are notable centers of the Tamil community of Sri Lanka.
