A Theme Park with Ethical Atmosphere by James Cook
The Chinese mythological theme park in Singapore, seen along Pasir Panjang Road, "Haw Par Villa" which was originally called "Tiger Balm Gardens", has been constructed in 1937 by the entrepreneurial brothers "Aw Boon Haw" and "Aw Boon Par" as a private centre for teaching traditional Chinese values. In 1979 the Gardens were sold to the Singapore tourism board by the Aw family. The name "Haw Par Villa" gives the meaning of "Villa of the Tiger and Leopard" in English.
This theme park gives a fascinating view of more than 1,000 statues and 150 giant tableaux which illustrates Chinese legends, history, and Confucian ideology. Some of the main creations that demonstrates such aspects of the culture can be mentioned as The statues of laughing Buddha, the Goddess of Mercy, the Romance of the three kingdoms, and famous the Courts of Hell, which is a portrayal of a gruesome underworld of tortures and torments set in the mouth of a dragon of 60meters. Also its morality tales include classic battles between good and evil and tributes to heroes of Chinese culture such as the famous warrior "Wu Song", who tamed a ferocious tiger with his bare hands.
In 1985 the park was closed to the public and re-opened in 1990 with its current name Haw Par Villa having been converted into an amusement park and then onwards it was promoted with the well known name "Dragon World". A new attraction that has been added to the amusement park is Tiger Car which is a classic car dressed up to look like a tiger and which is a duplication of the Tiger Car that late Mr. Aw Boon Haw had owned. Also another addition to the park is "The Jade House" which displays a wide collection of Jades that Aw Family had collected over the years.
Another most important feature of the park is Tableaus of Virtues and Vices, which attract mostly parents and teachers accompanied by children. It illustrates the virtues of desirable human behavior and practices as opposed to the curse of offenses. They demonstrate many ethical Sayings for youth such as,, 'debts lead to a life of ruin', 'worldly happiness is transitory', 'be kind to animals', 'gambling can cost you everything', 'work hard in your youth and have no regrets' and 'be a loyal friend'. These are the key factors that attract more and more local as well as foreign visitors to this legendary park and in consequence, a large number of people approach to main hotels Singapore that are within close proximity of the Haw Par Villa.
