The Ardagh Chalice, which deals with the Book of Kells as one of the best known works insular art, made art Celtic is generally thought to have been made in the 8th century AD.
The large crown, with two silver handles, decorated with gold, gilt bronze, brass, lead pewter and enamel met from 354 separate pieces. The main body of the cup is formed by two hemispheres of silver leaf with a blind rivet together by a band of gilt bronze. Names of the apostles is incised in a frieze around the cup, below a belt of gold wirework insert panels bearing animals, birds and interlaced geometric. Techniques used include percussion, engraving, lost wax casting, sconces filigree, cloisonné and enamel.
It was found in 1868, along with a bronze cup and four brooches, for two children, Jim Quinn and Paddy Flanagan, digging in a potato field in south-western side of Rath (ring fort) Reerasta called, near the village of Ardagh, County Limerick, Ireland. He had a bronze cup inside, and four decorative brooches (fibulae). Buried without any protection as they were covered only by a slab of stone, the pieces must have been buried in haste, probably temporary, as if the owner probably intended in exchange for them at a later time. Brooches found with the show chalice was not buried until the period of the Vikings.

The cup appeared on a postage stamp issued by a definite value between An Post 1990 and 1995 as part of Heritage Irish Treasures Series, designed by Michael Craig.
Two trophies of the Gaelic Athletic Association is based in the Chalice: the O'Duffy Cup and Sam Maguire Cup.
Finally, it may be related to the Chalice Derrynaflan are close in the neighboring County Tipperary. In that time the ruling dynasty in Tipperary and Munster were most Eganachta, while its allies and possible cousins U Fidgenti failed in the Limerick area (see Byrne 2001, Begley 1906). Despite the early suggestion that the cup was made of Clonmacnoise and stolen from there by a Danish Limerick is widely distributed, this is unprovable. A source Munster is so likely or more likely given the discovery in 1980 of Sister Derrynaflan Treasury. Clonmacnoise in origin is not mentioned in the website of the National Museum Ireland.
