China Challenges Data Center
By Jose Allan Tan
The good news is that China has a competent workforce to extract knowledge needed to build and support data center operations. The bad news is that managers of data centers in China face the same problems as their counterparts in developed countries like the U.S. and Europe.
While wages, which constitute an important part of IT budgets are still low relative with the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia, other costs are not too far.
"Mature industries like banking are highly dependent on technology thrive. In these markets, data centers are built based on rules similar to those of the market in key markets like the U.S. and Europe, "Jerry said, Yi, Consultant Senior Solutions, China Hewlett-Packard.
A significant advantage that China has more than markets such as Singapore and Hong Kong is the limited amount of infrastructure in the place. Chinese companies are expanding to meet the opportunities of national and international businesses can take advantage of new technologies and not be made by legacy applications and business processes.
China's economic boom is a significant impact on how data centers are designed, built and operated. many of these centers, but still in the major business cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. In these places, costs real estate are increasing rapidly and data center managers need to carefully plan the space for them to ensure effective use of resources main.
Y. Richard Mei, Technical Manager, Systems Engineering CommScope, notes that China's designers and data center managers can benefit from best practices learned in structured cabling, cooling / heating / ventilation and lighting to improve operational efficiency.
"The inhibitor to the data center design is not satisfactory price, but growth. Companies need to plan growth carefully. Otherwise, it is discovered that the installation of data center is built today will not be able to meet the demands of business in one year time, "he said.
Raju Chellam, Asia-Pacific vice president of AMI Partners, an international research firm, agrees. "The larger and more error data shared between the designers of Central Asia is poor planning. The lack of adequate foresight and lack of attention to the potential for business growth is happening in some data centers to a level within 18 months. This is a waste of company resources and will undoubtedly translate into business opportunities lost as companies struggle to build new data centers or expand existing ones. "
Although virtualization is to reduce the number of new servers being purchased, the compact design of blade servers means that the cooling and ventilation become important factors in the data center design and operation.
"Companies have to look at advances in dynamic smart cooling technology for cooling-over-provisioning and greater problems in operating costs, "said Yi.
Mei recommends adhering to the standards when selecting the basic components of a center data. "It's a mistake to assume that buying cheaper cables and connectors will save you money. On the contrary, such a practice often leads to higher business costs eventually realize that sacrificing reliability and scalability to save a few dollars. There are hard dollars lost when a data center goes down because of faulty wiring "Says Mei.
Another challenge facing IT managers is the question of budgets. China's economy is booming and growing businesses. But IT budgets are not keeping up with growth beyond the technology. To add pressure to the boiler, the focus has remained on the cost of acquisition rather than the total cost of ownership. Shopping Unfortunately, initial price is clearly visible to finance and senior management.
Two other costs are often overlooked in the planning stages are operating costs and implementation costs. The first system includes power management and cooling and the impact of system failure. These costs are difficult to quantify in detail. The latter leads to variability clause will mean additional costs made subject to delays that can not be predicted with accuracy.
Troy Syn, APJ TSG Presales Manager main SWAT, HP Technology Solutions Group in the notes that today certain limited IT budgets, there is a reluctance to invest capital in IT. "This has given rise to a" Band Aid "for investment in IT. However, this approach would also lead to a (slowly) increasing the rate of implementation of IT costs. Taking into account that now is a critical component of company operations, Perhaps the biggest mistake that must be changed is that IT investments have to do to long-term changes, "says Syn.
In fact, good planning, attention to detail and foresight are the attributes that accompany some of the best data centers built in the world. To listen to the experience of others will pay dividends quickly.
