Is Japanese Lusterware Food Safe?
Probably a bit of a stupid question, granted, but I can't find the answer through my own Google-fu. I recently acquired a tea set of Japanese lusterware, a creamy-orange on the exterior and white on the interior. Since I've never had lusterware before and I know that some vintage/antique cutlery and dishes are now deemed not food safe due to the metals used, I'm wondering whether mine is food safe or not.
I would think that as long as the finish is intact that it would be safe for items that are NOT acidic (fruits, anything with tomatoes). Usually these items are more decorative than utilitarian these days and the minute particles that can leech out would not be harmful to a healthy person who used it briefly. Remember, now they are saying that most of the plastic water bottles the world is using can leech chemicals into our bodies as well.
